Bobbie Reno

A family of six, including two adults and four children, poses in front of a large red Case IH tractor. ABE graduate Bobbie Reno (on the left) wears a blue-toned floral dress with a light blue cardigan. The man to the right wears a plaid shirt and holds a baby. A boy in a suit stands between them, and two young girls in matching floral dresses stand in the front.

鈥淚 never thought I would get my HSE!鈥 exclaimed Bobbie Reno. In April of 2020, she received a phone call which informed her that she did, in fact, earn her High School Equivalency Diploma. After attempting math twice, she had passed! 鈥淭hat phone call was definitely my proudest moment. It shows I have worked hard.鈥

Bobbie was adopted as a child and shared that her adopted mom signed her out of school the day she turned 16. 鈥淎t the time, I thought it was cool she was doing that, but now I wish I wouldn鈥檛 have.鈥

Almost 20 years later, she knew she wanted to come back to school. It was hard for her to make it to class since she was working and taking care of her four children, but when she began staying home with her kids full-time, she knew it was the right time to pursue her HSE. 鈥淲hen I didn鈥檛 work anymore was when it became much easier to focus on school.鈥

In the fall of 2019, Bobbie enrolled with our VU Adult Ed Program in Evansville. Her kids were her main motivation; she shared, 鈥淚 really wanted to show my kids that it鈥檚 good to finish school. There were times that I never thought I would get this, but I got it!鈥

Bobbie鈥檚 teacher, Marsha Stowe, was extremely excited for her also. She said, 鈥淲hen I think of Bobbie, I think of a very positive person and great mom. She always worked her class schedule around her kids. When she would come to class, which was quite often, she would always put forth her best effort. Whatever I put in front of her, she tried to do. I never heard her complain.鈥

Bobbie would like to start working outside of her home when her youngest son starts kindergarten. 鈥淚 just want to be able to get a job and put on there that, yes, I have my HSE. I鈥檝e never been able to do that.鈥

Bobbie鈥檚 advice to others wanting to get their HSE is, 鈥淕o for it and work hard! It鈥檚 worth it!鈥

Congratulations, Bobbie!! Your hard work has indeed paid off!!!
